Ridiculous Road Trip #2, Day 29 -30, Gulf Shores, Alabama
April 28
We parted ways with Lorne, who headed back home to Dade City. Doug and I journeyed on along the last of the Florida panhandle and on to Gulf Shores, Alabama for a few days.
We camped at Gulf State Park, an enormous campground with some great trails and lakes, and just a mile or so from the gulf.
Since it was a very warm afternoon, we scampered off to check out the beach. And discovered that there was a red flag warning out for strong surf and currents.
We decided to check out the surf anyway, and since there were other folks in the water, not getting caught in rip currents, we took a chance and played in the waves too. It was definitely not a floating gently in the surf kinda day…but it was a blast to dive through the wild surf for a while!
We headed back to the campground for our first real shower in a week, and headed out for some amazing Thai food. And the restaurant has this puzzling graphic on the restroom door.
Are the restrooms underwater?

Saturday dawned with dense fog, a chill in the rain, and quite a bit of rain in the forecast. We decided to head out to the beach again, to see what changes the weather had made in the waves.

Lovely fog!
It was pretty chilly, so we opted for enjoying the beach without going for a swim, at least until the rain started.
Luckily, the storm blew through in a few hours, and we were had fairly clear skies for our dolphin cruise.
We managed to see a pair of dolphins, a adult and a baby in the distant shallows.
And then, as we steamed back to the dock, trying to beat out another round of rain, we got a close up view as a trio of dolphins played near the bow of the boat.
The cherry on top of our visit to Gulf Shores was the amazing dinner at Zeke’s Landing. This place caught our eye as we’d never seen a restaurant with a 5 star Google ranking with thousands of reviews. Despite a bit a wait for a table, it went quickly as we were kept bemused by a bachelor party from Louisiana, who decided we needed to be entertained.

The food and service at Zeke’s was superb. There was also some divine desserts, crème brûlée and banana foster bread pudding. They disappeared all too quickly! Zeke’s has definitely earned its 5 star rating!!
