Ridiculous Road Trip #2, Day 21 -23, Mermaids and Manatees

 April 20

Yesterday, as we were heading towards Lorne’s house, we passed a sign for Weeki Wachee Springs…and Doug may have excitedly yelled, “WE HAVE TO GO SEE THE MERMAIDS!!!!”

And after some mocking, we did. 🧜‍♀️  It turns out the mermaids have been a classic Florida roadside attraction since 1947.

Doug is super excited to meet Lucy the alligator

We watched an Anhinga preen herself on a boat ride on the springs.

Thursday was a day of resting, blogging, and laundry for me, while the boys headed into Tampa to test drive and buy Lorne’s fancy new vehicle! So shiny!!

On Saturday, we quested for a different kind of mermaid…the manatees of Homosassa Spring!

Manatee Salad Bar

Lu, Florida’s most famous hippo

Lu, and an ever hopeful black vulture.

And because there can’t be too many videos of manatees snarfing lettuce, here are a few.

Lorne is lobbying for an extra special Dade City sticker

Florida!

So fun to follow along! What are your rules for filling in a sticker? Surely you two have been to Utah. New York. Right??

The official rules for stickers are an overnight stay or something significant. “Significant” is a hotly and ridiculously debated topic. 😁

Fiona means “overnight stay (in the camper) or something significant (that the camper could talk about later).” We have stories about New York City, but the camper was too far away to witness them.
